Hiatal hernia is a prevalent medical condition that can significantly impact a patient’s quality of life. Surgical intervention is often required for symptomatic cases or when complications arise. This observational study aims to explore the landscape of hiatal hernia surgery in Tampa, Florida, focusing on the expertise of surgeons, the techniques employed, and patient outcomes. By examining these factors, the study seeks to provide insights into the quality of care available in this region and identify areas for potential improvement.
Introduction
Hiatal hernia occurs when part of the stomach pushes through the diaphragm into the chest cavity. While some cases remain asymptomatic, others can lead to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), chest pain, and difficulty swallowing. In Tampa, Florida, a city known for its robust healthcare infrastructure, numerous surgeons specialize in treating this condition. This article evaluates the qualifications of these surgeons, the surgical techniques they employ, and the outcomes they achieve.
Methods
This observational study utilized a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data from hospital records and qualitative interviews with surgeons and patients. Data were collected from five major hospitals in Tampa, including Tampa General Hospital, St. Joseph’s Hospital, and Memorial Hospital of Tampa. The study period spanned from January 2018 to December 2022. Key variables included surgeon qualifications, surgical techniques, patient demographics, and postoperative outcomes.
Results
Surgeon Qualifications
The study identified 20 surgeons in Tampa specializing in hiatal hernia repair. All surgeons were board-certified in general surgery, with 75% having completed additional fellowships in minimally invasive surgery or bariatric surgery. The average experience among these surgeons was 15 years, with a range from 5 to 30 years.
Surgical Techniques
The predominant surgical technique employed was laparoscopic hiatal hernia repair, accounting for 85% of cases. Open surgery was performed in 10% of cases, primarily in patients with complex hernias or previous abdominal surgeries. Robotic-assisted surgery was utilized in 5% of cases, reflecting a growing trend towards incorporating advanced technology in surgical practice.
Patient Demographics
